Mr. Donnelly, the coach, finished the day’s exercises earlier because Henry Fuller’s father came down to the High School field to tell him that he had just received a telegram from Washington announcing that Henry’s brother had been killed in action in Germany. Henry was the team’s best shot-putter. Mr. Donnelly allowed Henry time to go to the locker room to change and leave with his father, and then blew the whistle, gathered all his boys and told them they could leave as well, as a sign of respect.
